Publishing terms

The terms for publishing a book through Itanile. They match the Author Terms in Itanile Reader, and partnerships add a few more.

Last updated: October 2026

Who these apply to

These terms apply to authors who submit books through itanile.org to be published and sold in Itanile Reader. Magazine submissions follow the submission guidelines, and use of the site follows the website terms.

Same terms as Itanile Reader

Publishing on Itanile means your book is read and sold through Itanile Reader, so the Author Terms in Itanile Reader are the terms for how you earn and are paid. In short:

  • Publishing a book through the self-service form is free.
  • You set the price of your book and can offer free sample pages.
  • Earnings come from subscription and pass reading, shared by pages read, and from readers who unlock your book with coins.
  • Itanile keeps a flat commission on what you earn. The Author dashboard shows the amount before commission, the commission and what you receive.
  • Earnings are worked out monthly and paid by bank transfer once they reach the minimum shown on your Earn page.

If these terms and the Author Terms differ on earnings or payouts, the Author Terms apply.

Your book and your rights

  • You keep the copyright in your book.
  • You confirm that you own or control the rights to it and that it does not break the law or anyone’s rights.
  • You give Itanile a non-exclusive licence to store, show, sell and deliver your book to readers on itanile.org and Itanile Reader. You are free to publish it elsewhere unless a partnership agreement says otherwise. If you remove a book, it leaves the library.
  • You keep your moral rights as an author, including the right to be named as the author and to object to distortion of your work. We will not change your text without your agreement, apart from corrections you approve.
  • You agree to these terms when you submit a book through the form.
  • Only properly edited and designed PDF files are accepted, with a cover image. Our editors review each submission and may ask for changes or decline it.

Publishing partnerships

Some authors may ask for more than self-publishing: a team that helps with editing, design, marketing and promotion, and publication through channels such as Amazon. This is a publishing partnership. It is optional, it is agreed case by case, and it adds to the terms above rather than replacing them.

  • Written agreement. Every partnership is set out in a separate written agreement signed by you and Itanile. That agreement decides the details, and where it differs from these terms it applies to that book.
  • Shared cost. Itanile and the author agree the total cost of producing and publishing the book, and the author contributes an agreed share of it.
  • Shared revenue. The team is paid through a deposit and a portion of royalties. The share of revenue each side keeps follows what each side contributed. For example, if the agreed cost is ₦1,000,000 and the author pays half, the author owns half of the revenue. This is an illustration, not a fixed price or offer.
  • No obligation. Asking about a partnership does not commit either side. We take on a small number of books and may decline.

The partnership model is still evolving, so terms may change for new partnerships. Existing agreements are not changed without your consent. To ask about one, write to [email protected].

Fraud and removal
